Three days into Spring and there was no better way to celebrate than with the joyous music of Melbourne’s own Vance Joy .
With a ridiculous amount of popularity forming through the hit track ‘ Riptide ’ , this up and coming folk-pop sensation has extended his reach to international shores and gained an increasing amount of fans and hype.
It was the last stop of Vance Joy’s national tour, and boy was the crowd buzzing! A sold out show was ready to hear what James Keogh ( Vance Joy ) had to offer. He brought along two stellar support acts, Roscoe James Irwin and Fraser A Gorman & Big Harvest ; talented supports for a talented main act.
Fraser A Gorman & Big Harvest were especially rousing, with vibrant energy, brilliant banter and music to heal the soul. Ohhhh yeah. Fraser Gorman’s vocals were honest and free, blending perfectly with the country/folk-y vibe of the band. Strings, horns and guitars made an interesting feast for the eyes and ears, with so much going on you couldn’t not be entertained!
After the brilliant supports, Vance Joy finally made his appearance, much to the delight of the gushing girls in the front row. Vance Joy’s band also came up on stage for a full scale musical delight. James’ vocals were impeccable, something I was curious to hear live, but I was unable to fault his voice as it glided through The Corner Hotel. Raw yet dreamy is the best way to describe it, as I watched two girls in the front row glue their eyes to James.
‘ Snaggletooth ’ was a song to empower you, as I must admit to getting a bit teary during that point of the show. If I almost shed a tear at a music concert, that’s definitely a good sign. Well… usually agood sign.Vance Joy’s talented band are not to be discredited, with the drummer, bassist and keyboardist putting energy and vigour into the performance. A folk-y, acoustic sound was also achieved as James played a few songs just him and his guitar. But the crowd were mostly quiet until it came to the last song of the evening, the one everyone had been waiting for. ‘Riptide’ got the whole crowd singing, with James even stopping singing at one point for everyone else to sing instead. A lovely moment as James could barely wipe the smile off of his face.
A charming night full of charming people and music, Vance Joy did not disappoint and definitely has a bright future ahead of him.
