Melbourne rock trio Kashmere Club launched their Lost & Sound EP at Cherry Bar on Saturday night. Friends and fans flooded in to check the fellas out, who were showcasing new tracks produced with the help of Aussie rock legend Chris Cheney (The Living End). One of the boys’ mates led as MC for the night; a self-confessed ‘hack comedian’, his cynicism and raucous jokes suited the Cherry Bar vibe.
Straight from Hamilton in country Victoria was supporting act Buddha in a Chocolate Box . Close your eyes and you could have been transported down to the local pub in Hamilton through the bands quirky but charming combination of husky vocals and a violin. With a large support base and catchy tracks like ‘ She Feels Like Home ‘, expect to hear more from these guys who are due to support British India next month in their home town.
Fellow support act, The Velvets, introduced the nights rock element with energy and solid tracks like ‘ Shoot You Down ‘ and ‘ Forty Thousand Scars’ . In between harmonica playing, lead singer Jim told the crowd that the only bad thing about being up on stage was ‘not being able to drink as much as you guys’. It was a good readjustment of sound before the headliners arrived.
Money for Rope had filled out the venue the week before. Kashmere Club had no trouble doing the same, with the crowd packing in tight and rocking out straight away with tracks ‘ Blood Runs Dry ‘ and recent single ‘ ‘ being belted out. With gentle giant Nathan on the drums and Jono and Bill up front, there were endless banter coming from the humble lads. Jono brushed off a couple of cheeky crowd requests for ‘ Riptide ‘ (he plays bass for Vance Joy ) with a smile. Most songs, like new track ‘ Reunion ‘ were short, fast and sweet. Kashmere Club managed to create a raw festive vibe that Cherry Bar exists for. The crowd was going nuts, the band were loving it and copious amounts of beer was being consumed. The night ended perfectly with Kashmere Club welcoming The Velvets back on stage to perform a rendition of The Rolling Stones’ ‘ Brown Sugar ‘.
