I had never seen Darwin Smith in real life before, and, honestly, I spent the majority of my Darwin Deez fandom days thinking that was his name. Turns out it’s not. When I discovered Smith was his real name I felt fairly unprofessional, yet I felt I had the edge on everyone still stuck in the days of liking the ‘Darwin Deez’s Hair’ fan pages on Facebook. On a Splendour detour, Darwin and his fellow band mates were going to do more than just show off sexy hairstyles.
Pluto Jonze was the lucky support act, with a nice crowd gathering early to catch a peek at this up-and-comer’s sweet new music. Recently releasing his debut album, Lachlan Nicolson played his upbeat and intriguing new tracks for the crowd. Using interesting instruments such as the theremin, Pluto Jonze showed off the exciting music we’re expecting in his upcoming album tour. A TV was at the front of the stage, and characters and patterns appeared on the screen in time with the beat and rhythm, cleverly grooving with the tunes. Pluto Jonze’s electronic and rock pop sound was uplifting and boosted the audience’s mood before Darwin Deez hit the stage.
The boys immediately started to rock the stage. Their fun and juicy indie pop music came alive as the audience began to move and sing. Every now and then a dance break would ensue, and the guys would drop their instruments and engage themselves in a choreographed dance routine to some strong electronic pop music. Clever and extremely adorable, each band member on stage was worthy of a cuddle after their cute dance numbers. ‘ Radar Detector ’, ‘ Up in the Clouds ’ and ‘ Bad Day ’ were among the tracks that got the best reaction from the adoring fans, with their upbeat and melodic guitars and vocals echoing through The Corner . Darwin also stopped every now and then to have a nice chat to the crowd, saying he enjoyed talking to us and that we were “nice and quiet”. He told many a story to do with wooing a woman in Sydney only for them to end up cuddling at the end of the night with Darwin sharing that “sex means a lot” to him. You could almost hear the swooning from the ladies in the audience.
With two encores, these guys rocked and brought fun to The Corner Hotel. Everyone left the venue bearing a big grin.
