A Monday night isn’t exactly the night best for a fast paced, high-energy gig but the timetabling did not stop a big crowd from showing up in support of the American visitors FIDLAR . Hot on the trail of their Splendour tour, the four lads of Los Angeles owned their performance, and the audience was ready to party like they didn’t have uni the next day.
I had a feeling the gig was going to get intense, but Dune Rats were up first, so I assumed it wouldn’t get crazy until FIDLAR came on. Boy, was I wrong. The Brisbane boys were a perfect support act, with pumping beats and Danny Beusa ’s raw vocals they enjoyed themselves as much as the crowd-surfing audience. The sound reverberated all over The Corner Hotel and security guards held the front of the stage to make sure nothing went amiss. Scoring a cheeky smile from Danny definitely amped my mood as the edge of the mosh seemed safe and comfortable after the shock of how quickly the audience got into the feel of the music. The pop-ish, punk-ish, rough sounds had everyone shaking their heads and moving. After that electrifying performance, I knew FIDLAR was going to get extreme.
They finally hit the stage, with the four Americans owning it as soon as they entered. Singer/guitarist Zac Carper did most of the talking, mentioning FIDLAR’s true meaning, F uck It Dog Life’s A Risk . The fast-paced style of music was intense as it was engaging. The guitar and vocal work of Zac and Elvis Kuehn energised the crowd and the guys on stage. Playing with ease and power, songs like ‘ Cheap Beer ’, ‘ Whore ’ and ‘ Wake Bake Skate ’ all pulled immense reactions from the audience, as the mosh pit went crazy and there was someone crowd surfing at least every 30 seconds. The violent and crashing guitars mixed with Max Kuehn ’s skillful and rapid drumming blended perfectly as the crowd screamed along to ‘ Cocaine ’.
Coming back for an encore from the rippling crowd, FIDLAR jumped back on stage to play some more explosive music to end on a massive high. With serious energy, fast punching music and fans like no other, they made an impressive first show in Melbourne and I look forward to them heading back to Australia very soon.
