Ondas Alpha hit the stage at The Tote without fanfare. Given that it was a cold Wednesday night, this didn’t surprise me; but their music did.
Their set consisted of dreamy, ambient rock, that oscillated between eerily calm and harder, faster guitar parts. The foursome had a good energy, and they piqued the interest of many of the patrons milling around the band room.
Technically, the band is quite accomplished. It’s very clear that their focus is on instrumental parts in conjunction with vocals, rather than being a backing band to a vocalist, which so often happens. In fact, the vocals seemed to be a secondary concern, with emphasis on the harmony between all of the moving parts of the band. This is not a criticism; it’s refreshing to see music approached in this way.
Despite being quite a new band, Ondas Alpha have already carved out a strong identity for themselves within their genre, and play with the assurance and confidence of a more established act.
