The Growl released their debut LP,
What Would Christ Do?
, in April this year after lead singer
Cameron Avery
returned from
touring with
Tame Impala.
Recently they set out on a National tour, with the first stop being Melbourne’s
Northcote Social Club.
Melbourne 4-peice
Mining Boom
opened the night. Mining Boom create a rough indie rock/pop sound that is a mash-up of late 70′s early 80′s garage/post-punk and synth based pop, making it both catchy and very danceable. Mining boom played a short ,yet effective, set to the fair few people who gathered early around the stage.
Next Nick Allbrook, Cam Avery and Peter Bibby came together under the name of
Peter Bibby and His Bottle of Confidence
with their garage blues and comical lyrics. The camaraderie amongst the group, along with the hard hitting blues, was exceptional. Peter Bibby’s rustic vocals had many laughing along as he sung lyrics which included details about drinking goon with a girl and getting filthy rich. Complimented by double bass, rythym guitar, and drums, the boys had everyone slowly moving about to their heavy jams.
Cam Avery returned to the stage with his band The Growl and changed from drummer to lead singer. Avery thanked everyone for coming out on a Tuesday night before beginning their set. The Growl combined bellowing double bass, lead guitar, drums, keys, backing electronic components, rhythm guitar and spectacular vocals to create a nice blend of rock/blues. Playing such tracks as ‘
Liarbird
‘ and ‘
Eleven
‘ from
What Would Christ Do?
along with trying out a few new tracks, there were no moments in which The Growl failed to hold the attention of the near full-capacity band room.
Avery mentioned that the band and himself were completely unprepared for the gig as they were up until 3am the night before rehearsing and managed to miss their 5am. You would not have even noticed this lack of rehearsal, however, as they played their single ‘
Doused The Lamps
‘ along with the singalong of ‘
John The Revalator
‘ with flair. Finishing their spectacular set with ‘
In The Belly of the Beast
‘, it was the guitar work on ‘
Cleaver Leaver
‘ that concluded the night in style.
