Arriving (fashionably) late to Sticky Fingers gig, I was surprised to see a huge que snaked around the side of the building. The show was a complete sell out. Not only do the band have a substantial following but their fans are a pretty diverse bunch too. Once inside, a hodgepodge of the hipster kind wearing felt bowler hats, heavy punk lovers, and dreadlocked clad individuals filled the band room.
Catching the end of duo Bootleg Rascal ’s soulful blues inspired hip-hop set, the rowdier crowd chatted away up the back while some girls were more interested in taking selfies in the toilets than watching the bands.
Those preoccupied during second support Lyall Moloney missed one amazing performance. This guy looped up his backing tracks, played guitar, harmonica, percussion, beatboxed, and sang. He’s a one man dub-hip-hop band with a unique Aussie flavour, incorporating harmonica, vocal yelps and percussive guitar into his songs. Particularly enjoyable was ‘ Go That Low ‘ with its looped backing, almost (dare I say) Flume -like, yet totally undercut with a reggae rhythm and perfectly timed break leading into verse that just hooked the now gripped audience.
As a lovely herbal smell wafted from the back of the room, the synthy key progression began behind closed curtains and the audience went nuts as they opened to reveal the five dudes of Sticky Fingers. Lead singer Diz Frost in his hawaiian shirt and bucket hat kept all members as well as the audience bopping to a chilled out skank.
Stick Fingers songs prove to be as diverse as their audience. Repeated lyrics develop form a casual ska sound to a controlled scream, while the tight band of keys bass, drums and guitar jam steadily with no motif dryly repeated. Contrast and consistency seemed to be the order of the evening. They play tracks like the bouncy and heavily reverberated ‘ Headlock ‘ followed by the contrasting low key intro of ‘ Willow Tree .’
Lyall Moloney joined Sticky Fingers on stage and they, along with the audience went crazy. Moloney and Frost bounced off each other and the band while launching themselves up on the foldbacks and downing Whiskey from the bottle. This lead on to the atmospheric keys, and heavy bass on ‘ Bootleg Rascal, ‘ then ‘ Caress Your Soul ,’ the title track from their debut album, restored the crazy crowd to full form.
Thanking the crowd for coming out and saying ,”Our first gig in Melbourne was to 5 people at that Laundry Bar place,” they were obviously loving tonight’s packed house. For the obligatory encore they pulled out their latest single ‘ Australia Street ‘ and some brighter indie pop singed tunes that still had their dub vibes. Mates went up on shoulders, a six foot topless man crowd surfed and the whole venue (including bar staff) let loose.
