A perfect and mild night fell over Melbourne on Friday, perhaps as an omen for the sold out performance that was to follow from the Brisbane boys of Hungry Kids of Hungary . I hadn’t seen these entertaining lads play since the year of 2011, when they graced the stage during the renowned St Kilda Festival, and I was interested to see how far they had come since the release of their new album You’re A Shadow .
I was lucky enough to catch both supporting acts, firstly with Them Swoops wooing crowds at The Corner Hotel with their melodic guitars and energetic vibe. Their thick sound and sometimes tropical feel pleasantly reminded me of fellow Australian band Last Dinosaurs .

A great start to the evening became an even more exciting one as The Preatures , from sunny Sydney, hit the stage as the second supporting act. Lead vocalists Isabella Manfredi and Gideon Bensen oozed attitude and talent as soon as they strutted onto the stage. Their music emphasized this with echoing guitars and mellow vocals; the badass attitude and different elements of genre made their music not only hard to explain but an exhilarating performance to watch.
An anxious twenty-minute wait for HKOH followed, with a buzzing energy filling The Corner. The lights eventually dimmed, and as the audience held their breath ‘ Sledgehammer ’ by Peter Gabriel filled the speakers. People began to look at each other in confusion, but then started groove to the old classic. After the five minutes of grooving, the curtains finally opened and cheers erupted as HKOH walked onto the stage. HKOH worked the stage effortlessly; their perfect vocals from talented Dean McGrath and Kane Mazlin were fresh and clear with upbeat liveliness from the whole band. The audiences were lapping up every moment as HKOH graced the adoring crowd with some older, classic tracks from their first album such as ‘ Scattered Diamonds ’ and ‘ Set It Right ’. But naturally this tour was about their new treasure; You’re A Shadow. ‘ Twin Cities ’ and ‘ Litter and Sand ’ were among the crowd favourites.

Ryan Straithe
played a stirring drum kit solo and
Ben Dalton
rocked on the bass, showing off his skills. This was just proof of the talent within this band.
The full band were then back on stage, rocking out and ending with catchy track ‘ Coming Around ’. The lads were then encored back on from cheering fans and played a cover of Tame Impala ’s ‘ Feels Like We Only Go Backwards ’, which they had performed on triple j ’s Like A Version segment. With the sad realization of the end of the show, and the end of their You’re A Shadow tour, Hungry Kids of Hungary pulled up their supporting bands on stage to sing and dance to ‘ Let You Down ’. Even a few members of the audience jumped on stage to have a dance, and it was definitely a moment to smile about.
