As is the case with any album that finds itself in my car’s one and only CD tray, I have been listening to Big Scary ’s debut album, Vacation to the point of near disintegration for the last few months. Over time, the duo muscled their way into my box of favourite Melbourne acts in operation, and I was near weeping in anticipation for their Corner Hotel set last Saturday.
On record, Big Scary drive their unique brand of slow-melting melancholy with conviction and exclamation. Tracks from their upcoming album, Not Art show serious promise and evolution for the band, and old reliables such as ‘ Bad Friends ’ and ‘ Falling Away ‘ serve as the aural equivalent of acupuncture therapy on the heart.
If your choice of weapon is music alone, it is no easy feat to break through the heavily reinforced human emotional shield. It is a credit to Big Scary’s Tom Iansek and Jo Syme , and a testament to their aptitude that their music so deeply resonates with as many people as it does – The Corner was easily at capacity. It is with a heavy heart that I concede that said influence didn’t translate live to the extent it could have, and what a shame it was.
The Big Scary kids aren’t playing around. How serious they are about their music is explicit in their live performance. The unfortunate truth is that this is to the detriment of their stage presence, which lacked a certain human touch. For a musical repertoire that is so inherently intimate, the energy in the room just didn’t do it justice.
I would have liked to see Big Scary go in one direction or the other, whether it have been Tom’s heart bleeding nails on stage and letting his tonsils touch the mic, or a stripped-back, low-lit, raw performance, minimalised to the point of spine-tingling intensity. The middle ground between the two extremes left a crowd of satiated and somewhat gratified music lovers; no sweat patches, no tears, no fire.
There is no doubt in my mind that Not Art will be an unbelievable record, I would just like to see Big Scary transcend reaching their audience through music alone. With potential so vivid that it’s almost palpable, you can’t help but want to see it materialise.
