The quaint and charming Workers Club was the setting for Saturday night’s performance from Perth lads Sons of Rico . Currently in the middle of their In Rico Glaciers tour, they were sure to get the Melbournians rockin’ and groovin’ to their smash hits.
The night kicked off with indie boys Neighbourhood Youth , proving Melbourne music talent is well and alive with thumping bass, clean and deep vocals and resonating guitars. Definitely proving themselves, the youth in this band is exciting and these boys will have big things to come.
APES were up next, or perhaps was it AGES ? Pretty sure I heard two different names from the band members who seemed unconvinced on their band name, but either way, gorillas or youngins hit the stage with a BANG! Their tough and gritty rock vibes rang out through the whole of Workers Club, with the rough guitars and belting vocals, they definitely struck a chord with the audience, particularly the girls in the front who sang and danced erratically along with water bottles in their hand, filled with nothing but water I assume.
It was finally Sons of Rico ’s turn, the small stage taken over by the five spunks. Lead singer Alex MacRae took the mic and his guitar with easy confidence, showing off his guitar skills in songs such as ‘ Against The Grain ’ and ‘ You Don’t Know What You’re Missin’ . His unique voice was captivating; with a great vocal range as evident in their hit single ‘ I’m Not Thinkin’ About You ’ that is nothing short of a brilliant breakup song. Keyboardist Brett Murray was sporting a comfy looking jumper that stated “This is my world” and Sons of Rico definitely worked Workers Club like it was their world. Murray had sublime talent on the keys, occasionally busting out some sneaky dance moves that were fairly impressive for being so confined in a chair. Some cheeky comments between the band were just proof of the connection they had, and Sons of Rico were definitely able to come out and show Melbourne a good time.
My only suggestion would be for Alex MacRae to get a haircut; I’m not sure how he was able to get through the performance having to constantly push that side fringe back. But I understand it’s all a part of the ‘look’ and I have to say that not only were Sons of Rico looking good, but they were sounding pretty great too.
