The words ‘SOLD OUT’ greeted me as I walked into The Corner Hotel in Richmond. Sold out shows are always high in anticipation and high in energy. Oh, did I say always? I meant to say usually.
Chaos Chaos, the two charming sisters from Brooklyn, was the first band to hit the stage. San Cisco had obviously brought these lovely ladies back from America, almost like a little souvenir to pleasure us Australians with. Both Asy and Chloe were on vocals and with their clever use of the synth and drums and kooky-yet-cute outfits, these girls made an entertaining opening act. By the time Brisbane 4-piece Millions got on stage the crowd was much larger and the audience slowly moved in closer, most likely wanting to get as close as possible to see if they could reach out and touch Jordi of San Cisco (I could tell that 80% of the female audience really wished they could’ve done that). But I was pleasantly surprised as Millions absolutely rocked it on stage, playing hit tracks ‘ Champagne ’ and ‘ Those Girls ’. Cheeky bassist Campbell was flaunting a bow tie and there was no way you could look away from lead singer/guitarist Dom ’s piercing stare as his voice reverberated throughout The Corner. But sadly, Millions’ time to shine was over as quickly as it started, and I found myself, along with the rest of the audience, ‘awww’-ing as Dom announced that it was their last song for the night.
The Millions’ sad departure set a high standard for headliners San Cisco. When the indie 4-piece finally hit the stage, the screams were blaring and the band got straight into their jangly, upbeat, energetic tunes. But something was missing from these youngins. For the band with probably the biggest, high energy tracks they were lacking in the energy these songs need. Jordi then mentioned they’d arrived at 3am, in which case of course they’d be knackered, but every band goes through that and for a sold out show you’d want to perform your best for your adoring fans. Looking at the exhausted band I caught eyes with Scarlett on the drums and we shared a smile, but after that I barely saw a single smile from the band’s lips. The melodic guitars and the Hawaiian shirts weren’t perking up the clearly drowsy band. Tunes such as ‘ Awkward ’ and ‘ Fred Astaire ’ received great response from the crowd, especially San Cisco’s latest cover of Daft Punk ‘s ‘ Get Lucky ‘, but the overall atmosphere was just not happening. At one point, Jordi even mentioned, “you guys seem more tired than us”, not exactly a phrase that will excite or energise a crowd. But the fans were still on their side, not backing down and grooving to the up-tempo tunes their young idols were pumping out.
At the end of the gig I left it feeling fairly bummed out, wishing Millions had come back on. But despite this, I know San Cisco are a young band and have a long way to go. Long tours are probably not their thing yet, but with time they’re gonna be superstars.
