A sold out show graced The Corner Hotel in Melbourne, the almost-home-town of Ballarat boys Gold Fields . They had a lot to be excited for, a big show flaunting the music of their debut album Black Sun .
But before Gold Fields could strut their stuff, two electric support acts took to the stage. Willow Beats have been on a roll lately, releasing their debut EP Alchemy with great reactions and buzz, and there’s no wrongdoing in this high acclaim for the duo out of Melbourne, with their live performance proving to be even more thrilling than the EP itself. Kalyani Mumtaz ’s stage presence is alluring as her tartan ensemble captured the audience’s attention. Her sweet and echoed voca;s flowed over Narayana Johnson ’s erratic and popping beats. A cool first act to get the night under way. The glorious darling Phebe Starr from sunny Sydney was the lucky second act to prance on stage before Gold Fields would make their Corner Hotel debut. With a glittery shawl wrapped around her head, Phebe graced the stage with style and killer vocals. Tracks such as ‘ Jurassica ’ and ‘ Alone With You ’ really got the audience energised, as Gold Fields were only moments from hitting the stage.
The curtains closed, The Corner became dark, and the DJs played as the crowd waited in anticipation. So much bass was going on that you could feel it vibrating through your body. You couldn’t even work out which song was playing because the bass was just so overpowering. I guess they decided waiting in a packed, sold out room wasn’t bad enough, and some ear-deafening bass would be the go. I couldn’t have been more relieved to see the curtains open as Gold Fields finally entered. Screams and cheers were proof of the audience’s admiration and excitement, and Gold Fields got right to it. It was one of the most light-orientated gigs I’ve seen, as big flashes, twirling lights, colours and lights beating in time with percussion filled the The Corner Hotel as the audience watched in awe. Thankfully no epileptic fits occurred, and Gold Fields’ Black Sun show was hardly black at all. The energy from the 5-piece band was phenomenal, with lead singer Mark Robert Fuller almost needing to lift his game compared to the energy of the two percussionists and the bass and lead guitarist. Energy strongly led the lads to stimulating levels of performance, and the music side was no different. Playing hit tracks such as ‘ Dark Again ’ and ‘ You’re Still Gone ‘, Gold Fields rocked it, with the strong beats and clear vocals flying from the stage. Their sound was thick with buzzing and ferocity yet simple and catchy melodies ran underneath. Ending with ‘ Moves ’ got the whole crowd, dare I say it, moving and the words were yelled by many listeners at the top of their lungs.
With no encore, the crowd were left somewhat thirsty for more, but with ringing ears and blinking eyes they all trudged home with the talk of Gold Fields on their lips.
Gold Fields rocked the audience and rocked the stage with energy, pizzazz and lights that almost could blind someone; the gig was so good that it would almost be worth it.
