M.I.A , I don’t really get what you’re doing. Are you being ironic? Are you experimenting with counter-counter-mainstream post-modernism? You certainly brought the ‘noize’ with your last track, aptly titled ‘ B ring the Noize ’ – but dare I say that for me, that’s all it was. Just noise.
If I may compliment the British electronica icon, she has nailed the use of MSN Messenger shorthand. Take new track, ‘ Only 1 U ’, for example, where she saved having to write four characters of text, assumedly to focus more time on her music. My advice? Call your next track ‘a’, and take all the time you need to apply a little more structure and focus into your craft.
I am anticipating some varied opinions on this release, but for me, it just isn’t there. A chaotic, mish-mashed synthetic composition interspersed with almost awkwardly unaccompanied vocals is the way I absorbed it, but be sure to let me know if I am just too ignorant to appreciate M.I.A’s avant-garde genius.
