MATT CORBY – Resolution EP

Ex-Australian Idol contestant, now indie folk heavyweight  Matt Corby has just released his forth EP, Resolution. You’re probably just a bit familiar with his cult hit  Brother , off his 2011 EP Into The Flame,  with that irresistible ’oooh oh oh, oooh oh oh’ hook (admit it, you sang it!). One can imaging it would be no mean feat for the artist to follow up his own massive success. Yet Corby has a strong contender for more success in  Resolution , as it displays glimmers of his trademark stylings but also a few pleasing surprises

Made up of four tracks, including previously released ‘ Resolution ‘ in mastered and demo form, ‘ Lay You Down ‘ and ‘ Evangelist ‘, the EP captures the artists poetic turn of phrase which make his lyrics both an artful force that pack a punch musically. His songwriting prowess is particularly notable on ‘Evangelist.’ It begins with extremely low grumbly vocals that are such a shock to hear; it was almost like listening to  Nick Cave. Rest-assured it’s simply a side of Corby’s we haven’t heard often. Definitely an interesting and welcome contrast to hear, more of this on the debut album please!

As for the demo version of ‘Resoultion’, is it just an EP filler, or does it have a legitimate presence on the release? It’s definitely an interesting listen with its echoey harmonies, light twangy guitar riffs, and a hushed airy tone (probably due to minimal production at this stage). And when contrasted with the final recorded and mastered track it’s a startling to hear all the loose ends tie up to create an absolute winner.

Matt Corby’s Resolution is now available on iTunes  and you can catch Corby at this years Splendour In The Grass .
