Covering Whitney Houston ‘s power anthem “ It’s Not Right But It’s Okay ” is no mean feat. Not only are you competing with one of the best voices of modern music, but you have to match the attitude of a song that is essentially just a huge middle finger to a cheating boyfriend.
Luckily, relationship dramas are an unfortunate middle ground across all genres of music, and while Chvrches cover of the late songstress’ hit song is very different from the upbeat original, it succeeds in both message and musicality.
Performed as a cover for the BBC , Chvrches’ version of this song is much moodier, and more in keeping with the vocal style of Lauren Mayberry . There is also a distinct electro element that has been added, and the addition of male backing vocals contribute to some significant differences in style.
This needed to happen for a good cover to exist though; there’s no point trying to do a straight cover, as it’s never going to be as good as the original. The several points of difference however make for an entirely new listening experience, and one that I would recommend checking out.
