As far as collaborations go, this one sits at the fringe of my mind when it comes to likely combinations.
Today,
Yolanda Be Cool
have
released their new track
‘
A Baru In New York
‘,
featuring the vocals of legendary
indigenous
singer/songwriter
Gurrumul
.
It comes served up with a
visual YouTube feist shot in Arnhem land NT (above) and an epic ‘Soundtrack Version’ from
Flume
(stream below).
What’s surprising is how well the song ‘just works’. There’s a nice mix between world music elements and YBC’s brand of disco that are somehow complimentary. A thumping tribal beat serves as an engaging platform for Gurrumul’s voice which is wound in to a soaring dance melody . It’s unashamedly a disco track, but a tasteful one at that.
Alongside the release is an epic remix from Flume which takes the song to a whole new dimension of lush tribal soundscapes and low-tempo beats.
You can preorder Yolanda Be Cool’s new album through iTunes.
