In 2011, four four-piece Scenic joined the Future Classics team and release their sophomore EP entitled Another Sky . With four tracks, they can now add Shockwaves is now added to their EP discography.
This fragile electronic/psychedelic pop spans a short yet grasping 14 minutes. Shockwaves is full of groovy bass lines, distorted guitar, singalong lyrics, hazy synth, both up-beat and slow tempo percussion and feel good-summer vibes.
Previously released self-titled track ‘ Shockwaves ‘ kicks it off with deep catchy basslines, mystical and flowing synth. There is much to enjoy across ‘Shockwaves’ as it not only verges closer to pop but later indulges into a groovy and hazy instrumental that forms around distorted guitar, later plummeting back into a final chorus.
‘ Overflow ‘ brings the tempo down a little. Synth overtakes the track in which percussion, bass, guitar and vocals create a Tame Impala vibe, and towards the end sounds a bit too similar, however this sound is dispersed a little in their next track ‘ Hours On End ‘ . A catchy flow of synth builds into percussion before distorted guitars welds underneath the vocals, still containing that Tame Impala vibe, but less so now the tempo quickens.
‘ Mesmerised ‘ is funkier. The bassline hums under up-beat percussion, heavily distorted guitar, excellent vocals and layered synth. ‘Mesmerised’ later falls into a build up of synth, before returning to the track’s overall sound.
Shockwaves is an excellent EP that boasts modern psychedelic pop, with its hazy synth, heavily distorted guitar and drifting vocals. It verges on being too similar to Tame Implala’s sound, which isn’t a bad thing, but Scenic could be called up on it.
