The broader, more commercial ‘EDM sound’ is not a something I’d usually promote over IDM, typically because it tends to favour the adrenaline rush of tired production techniques over creativity. However, 22 year old Brisbane producer Edd Van Berg constructs the best of both worlds in his new song ‘ Signs ‘ featuring vocals from Tina Khasi .
The track fires at a rapid pace, but squeezed between each kick drum is enough detail to keep ‘ Signs ‘ an interesting experience. Packed in just under 3 minutes is a relentless bouncy keyboard covered by the gentle and catchy feature vocals of Tiana Khasi and a real (not sampled) trumpet solo.
If Edd Van Berg can continue to ride this fine line between the two styles, he could find himself being a wanted commodity this festival season.
