Local dance heavy hitters Yoldana Be Cool have been nice enough to grace us with the latest Ripe Guest Mix , co-presented by the UE BOOM speaker .
The dance kingpins have made themselves a household name within the club scene. These guys never seem to be on the break pedal and are always in a constant cycle of touring and production.
Speaking of which, the guys just wrapped up a massive string of dates right across Europe and American. From what we’ve sussed out, there seemed to be no shortage of rowdiness amongst the huge bill of shows, all culminating at the iconic Burning Man festival .
While Yolanda Be Cool are continuously evolving their sound, this week’s Ripe Guest Mix gives you insight into what the guys dig and what they play at their gigs. In this 30-minute mix you’ll hear a refined selection of what the guys like to call ‘mainroom funk’ amongst other genres from talents local and abroad (including a sneaky listen of their new colab with Azari & Ill ).
We had a chat to the guys about what’s been going on.

Q&A WITH YOLANDA BE COOL
Matt Bladin: You guys have had a massive year of touring so far, what’s been some of the best bits?
Yolanda Be Cool: It’s such a cliché to say how amazing Burning Man was, but it was pretty amazing. But this tour, we have literally been to all our favourite cities – New York, LA, London, Paris, Berlin and some crazy places in between. Playing after local hero Etienne de Crecy to a packed Social Club was pretty awesome. Oh, and we chilled all week in the W Hotel in Bali so no complaints there as a way to finish seven hectic weeks on the road.
MB: What kind of sounds and artists were making their way into your sets over this latest string of dates?
YBC: We have been playing a lot of what we like to call ‘mainroom funk’, or ‘tech funk bangers’, not sure this is really a genre but artists like Destructo , Go Freek , Oliver , Bixel Boys , Motez, Justin Martin , Eats Everything , tracks that do the same job as your typical EDM tune, but are nothing like a typical EDM generic banger. We also have a few of our own that do this job, which has been a big goal.
MB: We heard you hit up Burning Man, is everyone still in one piece? How did that all go down?
YBC: I think we were actually pretty surprised at how well we felt after it. I think maybe you live off the fun for so long after, that you forget about the damage you have done to your body. But yeah, as per the above, words and pictures really don’t do that place justice. Everyone we know that went there has been dealing with it by getting excited about next year.
MB: Your music has continued to develop over the last couple years. It seems like you’re constantly trying to push your creativity, with your collaboration with Gurrumul for example. Where do go for inspiration when trying to evolve your music?
YBC: Well, we love all kinds of music so I guess we get inspired by shopping on Beatport, but also, looking back at records that were made between five and 50 years ago. Lately, we have been revisiting 2005 electro and the early fidget sounds that followed and getting a lot of inspiration.
MB: What’s in store in the near future for Yolanda Be Cool?
YBC: Well, we have two singles coming, the first being our collab. with Omar , ‘ To Be Alone ’, which will come out locally on Sweat It Out and also via the legendary New York house label Nervous . Plus, we have our collab. with the guys from Azari & III, which is a full flip of the tune ‘ All That She Wants ’ by Ace of Base , which we are really excited about. Then we have a few club EPs we have been testing out in the clubs.
MB: Who’s killing it locally and why?
YBC: Australia really feels like it’s in a golden age at the moment. Our label, Sweat It Out has a huge abundance of talent right now. Go Freek are guys that make tunes that we literally play ever track of. Then there’s Rüfüs whose album is the album we pull out at after parties all round the world, to show off about how good Australia is. Then we have What So Not , Caseno , Danny T , Harris Robotis , Victor Lassance , Frames , Indian Summer , Adapt or Die all doing stuff we are losing it on. Also, special shout to Wongo who has sent us some tunes recently that are next level, and then there’s Motez who we are in love with. A lot, basically.
