The Ripe Guest Mix with Victory Team

Victory Team is no doubt a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of over the next 12 months. If somehow, you’re not already familiar with his work, then this 50 minute track of high energy put together for our Guest Mix series is sure to give you the perfect idea of what this Melbourne producer is all about.

Victory Team AKA  Chevy Long is one busy dude. Amongst finding the time to party as one half of the successful dj/producer duo Indian Summer and running the music network Wax Waves , he’s found the time to glue his hands to the midi keys and produce what, in our opinions, is one of the best break through dance EPs of the year.

Der Klerb “ (Part I), the 4 track EP released through Bossman and Wax Waves first hit our inboxes about a month ago. Its unique, heavily layered yet strangely succinct sound instantly caught our attention. Since then, its collection of slowed tempos, layered vocal samples and infectious baselines has had us up and dancing around our speakers non stop, and we’re not the only ones…

The “Der Klerb” EP has received praise from all over the shop as well as radio play from the likes of Toddla T , Cousin Cole and Nina Las Vegas , even getting a spin on the world stage through the prestigious BBC1 .   On top of all these accolades Victory Team, Wax Waves and Bossman have still put up the EP as a 100% free download for your listening pleasure over here .

Thanks Chevy, you’re alright.

Amongst working on up coming releases for Indian Summer, touring shows and working on a forthcoming Part II, Victory Team has put together an exclusive Guest Mix for the Ripe which also available for free download via The Ripe Soundcloud or the player above.

Throughout the massive 51 minute set, you’ll hear tracks from Diplo , Boys Noize , Savage Skulls , Snakadaktal and Baauer as well as 5 EXCLUSIVE tracks from Melbourne buddies Tomderson (A massive joint Snakadaktal remix), Purple Sneakers DJs and of course Victory and Indian Summer.

We Had a Quick Q and A with Chevy about his work and what’s coming up in the near future.

The Ripe Q & A with Victory Team.

Matt Bladin: Your developing a very identifiable and unique sound lately, with this ep especially; what have been your strongest inspirations during the production of Der Klerb?

Victory Team: The first part of the EP was written mostly last year when I was living in Sweden. The Moombahton scene was just kicking off and the clubs I was going to were pushing it out on high rotation. So artists like Munchi, Dillon Francis, Dave Nada and Diplo were all huge influences and helped me to identify the sound I wanted to craft. There were also plenty of other talents seperate to the Moombahton scene that helped push everything along, guys like Panteros666, Canblaster, Swick, Boy Go Yoko, Crookers, Boys Noize, etc.

M.B: The ep has been receiving plenty of love from all the place, from names including Toddla T, Cousine Cole and Nina Las Vegas, how have you found such reviews? And what has this meant for you as you approach new releases?

V.T : The support has been hugely validating, Haha! Just before I went away last year, I found the support from Nina Las Vegas on a track I uploaded to Triple J Unearthed yeeeears ago (one that I’d kind of given up on) and that really kicked me back into gear. I guess what the more recent support has done is pushed me to really progress with the next release, everything needs to be cleaner and tighter!

M.B: The ep has been a joint venture between your own Wax Waves and “brother Label” Melbourne outfit Bossman Records, How did you team up with these fellow forerunners of forward thinking music?

V.T: I’ve been following what Sam (The big gun/baws dog/head honcho at Bossman Recs.) has been doing for years and after the first couple of BMR releases, I really aspired to be a part of it. I showed Sam some tracks early last year and it all just flowed from there.

M.B: How does your approach, or work process in your personal production differ from the great work you have been putting out along side Michael Phelps Backstroke under your joined moniker ‘Indian Summer’?

V.T: Not that much, except with Indian Summer its not as lonely (Naaw). Gabe and I work really well together, ideas generally flow a whole lot quicker when we’re working on Indian Summer stuff and we’ve been friends long enough that we don’t have to tip toe around what we like/dislike. His only complaint so far has been that I leave the office chair too warm. Is that a weird thing? Leaving chairs warm? Maybe I should get that checked.

M.B: You’ve been touring heaps through out 2012, have you had much of a chance to test out any of Der Klerb live? And in a larger sense how do you feel the dance music coming out of Melbourne at the moment fares against the rest of Australia?

V.T: Yeah! It has been so great to be able to present a finished product in the sets I play. Up until the beginning of this year I’d always been really hesitant about playing anything I’d made either as Victory Team or with Indian Summer out at clubs. I think this was mostly because up until this point everything I/we had made had been mixed & mastered in headphones and that can be painfully obvious when you’re playing through a club sound system. If you clear the room with your own track, self doubt fly kicks you in the stomach.

As for the dance scene in Melbourne, I couldn’t be happier. I really feel like we’ve got something special going on at the moment. There’re some world class venues/nights, being run by people that are just as excited about the music as the people making it. With this, crowds are demanding sets that boast tunes they’ve never heard before, which is super exciting to me. I don’t think this is individual to Melbourne though, most crowds in Australia seem to be warming more and more to really diverse stuff.

The other week in Perth we had a girl waving a request at us from her phone, which usually sucks, but I checked it and saw it was Hudson Mohawke’s ‘Cbat’. I teared up a little.

M.B: Several promotions, including the awesome video put together with the help of Video by Nic Dureau, Sam Gill (aka Gilsun) title the ep as ‘Part One’. What can we expect from part two and more importantly when?

Part Two is really close to being completed, I’ve got 3/4 tracks pretty much ready to go. I’ve included the lead single ‘Fizzy Milk’ in the mixtape, so I hope it gets a good reception!

As for when, I’m not all too sure, but it’s penciled in for January/February next year.
