Emerging New York band The Dig first grabbed my attention in May 2012 when I posted their track ’ I Already Forgot The Things You Said ‘ on THE RIPE . The song made it in to my ‘ favourites playlist’ for that year and has continually grown on me (you can stream it below). Yesterday, I caught wind that the band are releasing their new EP ‘ Tired Hearts ‘ tomorrow – so naturally, the hunt for some of the new releases began.
Band member, Emile Mosseri , David Baldwin , Erick Eiser and Mark Demiglio seem to be taking a fresh approach on ‘ Tired Heart’. The sound has shifted from smooth, swirling dark pads to richer, more organic pop-rock. The general feel is more upbeat and gritty with tones that reflect bands like The Black Keys but then fall back in to nostalgic versus similar to the early work by Canadian band Stars . There’s certainty a 90′s pop-rock flavour that conjures multiple comparisons – yet overal The Dig remain interesting and distinguishable.
True to this form, their latest single ‘ How Can You Trust A Feeling’ combines cathedral organs, acoustic guitar and crashing rock drums. Well structured bridges and versus steer the song through winding refrains and soft wispy break-aways which boarder on psychedelia. ‘ Over You Again ‘ is probably my favourite of what I’ve heard from ‘ Tired Hearts’ . A softer, less intrusive instrumental builds throughout to create a fast energy that isn’t overbearing. Being a massive sucker for male/female harmonies, this really hits home. There’s even a hint of B ig Scary in the way the band have fused percussion, acoustic and synth. Meanwhile, Angeline drops back a notch as a classic romantic rock ballad that breaks away with spacey instrumentals (the last minute is insanely cool).
Tired Hearts is a bright flare, shot up from an expansive ocean of new music – it demands attention. The EP is out tomorrow, but you can grab a copy on the bands Bandcamp and follow them on for more.
