Released this week, Modern Pest is the new EP from Melbourne’s Spender .
It features previously released singles ‘ Bed & Chair ‘ and ‘ Magic Man ‘ in amongst a bevy of new delights. Utilising collaborations with Clairy Browne (minus her Rackettes ) and Australia’s number one music man Gotye , the EP also features new singles ‘ Never Again ‘ and ‘ Too Hot to Sleep, Too Cold to Hold ‘.
Tom Spender ‘s music seems to get stronger and stronger with each new release. Swelling out and filling up with the many sounds he often produces himself, the stand out track for me is ‘Never Again’ (yep that’s the one with all that fucking cake). I just can’t get over those smooth vocal dips and echoing sax movements.
This guy has been on the music scene for a steady long time so it’s surprising to hear that this is a debut EP. What isn’t surprising is that Spender’s many years of hard work, combined with busking, writing and recording music for radio and tele and producing music for other musicians, have made Modern Pest worth the wait. It’s an intricately connected space of ideas with moody beats, sultry woodwind inflections and husky tones pasted together artfully in a short string of romantic, restless themes.
