Illusive UK masked producer SBTRKT has just let loose an brilliant new single titled ‘ IMO .’ Released out of the blue yesterday, this track is purely an instrumental ordeal, and although claimed to be both unmixed and unmastered, it’s practically impossible to tell. It’s the producers first release since his 2011 self titled album, which included triple j hottest 100 of 2012 inclusion , and it certainly shows that SBTRKT isn’t hitting the wall creatively when it comes to new material.
‘IMO’ opens with a vast and eery sound scape of shooting synths, reminiscent of a gaming soundtrack. But soon enough the characteristic wooden tribal tone we’re use to hearing from the artist breaks through. The tribal beats merge with the glitchy arpeggiations and twinkling metallic embellishments to create the exciting two and half minute snippet of a release.
Accompanying the song are visuals featuring a blue spinning cosmic rock that’s covered in a vibrant yellow mould, courtesy of a collaboration between Lorenzo Durantini and a hidden place (the anonymous designer behind SBTRKT’s tribal masks and album artwork).
