Whimsical folk-inspired electro pop defines Melbourne band Brightly ‘s debut album Beginnings & Endings , released earlier this year. Now, only a few months later, the busy bunch is getting reading to release their new EP, The Greylings .
Dumping the synths, vocoders and other electronic accessories, the latest single lifted from this release, ‘ World War ,’ and a reworking of an older track, ‘ Doubt ,’ is part of their effort to ”put together five songs that were spontaneous, warm and honest.”
‘World War’ isn’t the catastrophic gloom and doom song you’d expect, but rather a jolly tune from the onset with its syncopated rhythmic click and groove. Nick Lam provides a steady flow of rocking arpeggiated electric guitar goodness, while sweeping synthesised string sections and tinkling glockenspiel glisten above it all.
Have a listen to the mellow and charming folksy rendition of ‘Doubt, with its subtle male vocal backing harmonies sitting behind the unique and highly enjoyable combination of piano accordion, guitar, and what I think is a ukelele.
The Greylings is released on September 30. Pre-order your copy here .
