I arrived at The Workers Club just in time to catch the start of main support Tin Lion ‘s set. Consisting of just two guys, Tin Lion is an eclectic mix of rock, synth and electronica, with some clear funk and even soul influences, with an almost Western vibe to a couple of their songs, and a distinctive late 70′s/early 80′s vibe. Intrigued?
I had few expectations walking in but was very impressed by their set, which included maracas and a tambourine. Their singular sound, retro vibe, and pure energy was electrifying. They only had one mishap after they had some technical difficulties during an instrumental interlude, but this didn’t detract from their performance. I will be definitely keeping my eye out for what’s next for them.
Around 11pm Lorde took the stage, along with her two-man backing band. She kicked off with crowd favourite ‘ Bravado ‘, from her debut EP The Love Club , and it sounded even better live. Lorde had a very diminutive stage manner; she seemed coy and even slightly surprised that she was getting so much attention at her sold-out show
Despite this, she had a very commanding stage manner, and what I found slightly odd and shy about her stage presence in the beginning, I found charming by the end of the show. Her sultry voice and almost seductive mannerisms while singing seemed slightly at odds with her very relaxed speaking manner; her New Zealand accent and quick smile were very disarming after watching the intensity of her musical performances.
Next up she played ‘ Biting Down ‘, also from her EP, before announcing that she would be playing “some songs you don’t know”. She then proceeded to perform new songs ‘ Glory and Gore ‘, ‘ Tennis Court ‘ and ‘ Buzzcut Season ‘.
After this diversion, it was back to her EP, for songs ‘ The Love Club ‘, and hit ‘ Royals ‘, before rounding out the night with unknowns ‘ Rose ‘, which is “about getting older which I’m really scared about” according to the singer, and ‘ 400 Lights ‘.
The crowd stuck around to beg for an encore, but given that she only has a six track EP (which includes the Fffrrannno remix of ‘Bravado’), she didn’t have much material to work with. However, I have no doubt that she will be back in the near future, perhaps for an album tour?
It was an amazing show, and I look forward to Lorde being back on our shores soon.
