It took me a while to figure this song out. At first I heard 80s glam-rock inspired guitar riffs with bends and hammers. Then I heard a 90s RnB with seductive vocals. I was confused.
What I am left with is the assumption that this song is a keeper. Because, who doesn’t love a 90s Bon Jovi RnB jam with a modern twist? Right? Produced by Lightspeed Champion , this track is a definite change of pace for Friends . The indie-pop five piece have drastically changed their musical direction. Low-fi indie dance tracks like ‘ Friend Crush ‘ and ‘ I’m His Girl ‘ portrayed a less electronic CSS vibe; fun and punchy with killer bass riffs and catchy vocals. Comparatively, ‘ The Way ‘ is completely different. Seductive and digital, it is straight out of the 90s. A down tempo RnB slow jam.
Many are saying that the change of pace is a welcome one. For me, I am not so sure. The song itself is a refreshing new take on an old genre, and it does conjure up nostalgic memories of the naughties, but I liked Friends the way they were.
