EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS – This Life

Hot off their heavily anticipated self-titled third album, new track ‘ This Life ’ is a melodically re-interpreted Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros mastering of Smokey Robinson ’s classic, ‘ Who’s Loving You ’.

There’s something telling and almost disconcerting about an ESATMZ (still a mouthful, even as an acronym) track starting off with as little celebration as this; no claps, no harmonies, no novelty…

And then bang. May I present you with a full gospel choir? Classic, gang – you always get me!

Front man Alex Ebert ’s tears, and assumedly, blood and sweat, are all over this record, naturally coupled with palpable intensity and poetic authenticity. Ebert has stated that it is one of his favourite recordings the band has produced to date, a sentiment very evident in the sweet grit of his projections.

On listening to any series of tracks from this 11-odd member outfit’s repertoire, I always find myself with an unmistakable urge to either bathe or attend my own funeral. On writing this I have only experienced the former, but either would complement their distinct brand of emotionally charged potency.

‘This Life’ is nothing short of profound. Perhaps enough to remind us that this life is profound. Well, that was profound.

The new self-titled album is due out 23 July, 2013, but for now, let the salivation of anticipation begin.
