CUT COPY – Free Your Mind

Unless you live near Moora, two hours north of Perth, there’s a good chance that you haven’t heard ‘ Free Your Mind ’, the latest single from Cut Copy ’s upcoming fourth album of the same title.

Even if you do live near Moora, there’s a good chance that because of the election you missed the campaign story about six hidden locations around the world where you could stream the track (the other locations Mexico City, Detroit, Californian Dessert, Santiago and the UK).

Without looking too deeply into the motives behind the marketing strategy, it could easily be portrayed as a move to generate buzz for a track that may struggle to hold its own through traditional release processes, but, surprisingly, ‘Free Your Mind’ is even more upbeat and instantly infectious than ‘ Where I’m Going ’ or ‘ Take Me Over ’ were before the release of Zonoscope .

Sure, lyrically Dan Whitford still isn’t the most creative frontman out there, with lines like “ You’ve got to reach the sky, if you want to shine ”, but you can argue that it plays into the light-hearted appeal of their vibe, which few dream-pop bands can pull off as convincingly. ‘Free Your Mind’ has an early 90s Utah Saints or The KLF influence with a keyboard technique I like to call “ running piano ”, which allows the verses and chorus to bounce into each other without a large chord or tempo shift.

Where Cut Copy’s first three albums were released just before the northern hemisphere summers, I’m excited that we’ll finally have a Cut Copy album fresh for our summer down under with its release on 5 November. Prepare yourself; over the next six months you’re going to hear this track slathered over many beach houses and backyard BBQs.
