Hey. Here is this band, they’re pretty cool. What genre are they? Ummmm, I have no idea.
Crystal Fighters ‘ obvious eclectic mix of influences make their music some sort of intense amalgamation of styles and genres. But somehow it works. Fast progressive dance music fused with melodies and dances of traditional Basque folk, alongside synthesisers, bass-driven wonk-funk, and beats fuelled by early 80s Spanish punk and experimental electronica. Their track ‘Swallow’ from their first album Star Of Love even has elements of dubstep.
Their new offering Earth Island is once again typically Crystal Fighters; unique, strange and captivating. Focussing on a driving beat and harmonic melodies this track will have you dancing. Crystal Fighters’ first album had me intrigued, was one of my favourite albums of recent years, and if their new stuff is anything like Star Of Love I will be a very VERY happy man.
On a side note, their live show is out of control. I was lucky enough to catch them at Melbourne’s Parklife last year and I was begging them to stop and chanting them to keep going at the same time. One of the most intense musical experiences of my life. Brilliant.
