There has been a notable live absence from Architecture In Helsinki as of late. Strange, as for years AIH have dominated the Australian music festival circuit. But since the release of Moment Bends in 2011, the illusive 5 piece have been on lock down having spent the past year recording a new album. ‘ In The Future ‘ is our first taste.
‘In The Future’ is a colourful modernist pop single, taking on elements of 80s new wave electronica – texturally and lyrically bright. Architecture In Helsinki have always had a unique pop sensibility, but not even ‘ That Beep ‘ could come close to how sickly sweet this track is. However, for some reason, herein lies their appeal. Disgustingly catchy tunes, that at times are comparable to top 40 pop chart toppers (see: ‘ Katy Perry – T.G.I.F ‘ at the 2:55 mark, that sax is delicious) but are passed off as indie dance masterpieces.
Perhaps it is that quirky tinge that we see seep into their live performances, or perhaps it is the fact that they make songs about the future or things beeping, but there is something keeping them from being lame. When I find out, I’ll get back to you.
