ARCADE FIRE – Reflektor (Feat. David Bowie & James Murphy)

It has been 3 yeas since Canadian 9-piece  Arcade Fire  have released any substantial material following their 2010 full length album ‘ The Suburbs’ .  With the earlier announcement and international hype around the October 29th release of their 4th full length studio album ‘ Reflektor’,   the first single taken off the album has made it’s way onto the net.

It come’s to us in the form of the LP’s title track ’ Reflektor ‘,  a 7 and a half minute dance orientated track featuring legendary music figure  David Bowie   and produced by former  LCD Soundsystem  frontman  James Murphy.  Clearly, these extra influences have rubbed on to the band, making for one of their bounciest and danceable tracks to date.

Soft keys hum, trumpets sound and the drums reveal an electronic based beat that mould the sounds together. The epic lyrics overlap, singing,  “Trapped in a prism, a prism of white. Alone in the darkness, darkness of white. We fell in love, alone on a stage, in the reflective age.” with a few lines are sung in french following the first verse. As the song settles, Bowie makes his cameo, fuelling the epic-ness of each rise and fall in the instrumental.

There is so much going on under the vocals. Complimenting guitar sounds and fade as the dance orientated synth works with the drum beat and bass guitar bellows underneath, all before everything sounds at once in a crazy mix under the chorus of “I thought I found a way to enter, It’s just a Reflektor (It’s just a Reflektor),I thought I found the connector, It’s just a Reflektor (It’s just a Reflektor)” , before calming down again for another verse and building into the chorus.

‘Refloktor’ is well structured, and cleverly uses layers to slowly introduce and then fade a heavy assortments of instruments without overkill. There is a strong hype surrounding the release of this new single and if the album follows the direction of the title track, ‘Reflektor’-  there is no doubt the album will be something special.
