Melbourne’s own Worlds end Press have supported Bloc Party on their recent national tour, performed on the Flinders street steps as apart of Melbourne’s White Night and have now finished their debut full-length album, produced with DFA founder Tim Goldsworthy. The 6 minute long track ‘ Deadbeat Sweetheart’ features dark moving synths, rippling bass, perfectly timed use of guitar and drumming that brings it all together to make a dark, coarse, yet upbeat sound.
John Parkinson’s vocals are soothing, with subtle and intriguing versus; “I’m your teacher, I’m your class, I’m your drug for your petty cash” and the repetition of a strong chorus “I know, that your mine, your with me all the time”. ‘Deadbeat Sweetheart’ slowly fades after the chorus, dispersing into funky synth, bass and a series of quirky sounds. It slowly builds as the drums and bass get stronger pairing with Parkinson’s soft mumbling of “you better run right on, right on” and a swirling of guitar. A heightening string of “ahhhh’s” build into a last chorus before all other sounds fade out, leaving the starting synth sounds to conclude the triumphant return of World’s End Press.
