There are only two reasons why this song was not my song of the year, last year. One, it contains a couple of minor 80s new romance clich é s and two, the sorrow line “how come people never smile to say goodbye”, was not the message I wanted to sum up my 2012.
Those tit-bits aside, ‘ Wings ’ (that finally has an official video), is a phenomenal and intricately layered song, with a wide variety of hooks, instrumentally and harmonically, as Haerts female lead singer Nini Fabi emotionally bares everything she’s got.
The video appears to be about a 90s childhood, where a mother is looking after carefree, youthful children, and the dad appears to be an outcast to rest of the family, in a depressing suburban town where everyone is longing for something greater.
If you had a tough childhood or were brought up with deranged parents, this video may be too rough to handle.
Interesting fact: triple j has surprisingly never played this song or any songs from this promising New York five piece band before, but with the debut album due later this year, don’t expect that to last much longer.
