The Ripe Guest Mix with SWISHER

It’s our favourite time of the fortnight again. We get to premier another exclusive Guest Mix from one of our favourite local acts on our soundcloud, in all its free downloadable glory. This week our bros SWISHER have come through with the goods in the most certified, snare snapping, bass booming, trapped-out mix to date.

Trap music seems to be the most hyped thing in EDM right now, producers are all trying to play with elements of the genre and crowds seem to be appreciating it when they do. Yet, while the constantly evolving trap sound has always had a massive following overseas, just recently a new wave of Australian producers are starting to try their hands at it with insane results.

SWISHER definitely fits into this category. Made up of two brothers, Petera and Phillip , SWISHER’s constant stream of releases and edits have built up an impressive body of work that has put them on the radar. The eldest Petera, also known as Play, has been spinning decks around town at Mynt, Cant Say and Survivor for a while now, but their joint recent step into production has seen him and his bro catch the ears of many new fans including the label Scattermusic .

Turnt Up ” is the first release from the duo and comes out on Scattermusic on the October 16. The EP features three original tracks that are constantly keeping you guessing as to where they will turn next as they work through a range of melodics, quirky samples, hard hitting bass and kicks all held together in a flurry of snapping snares and high hats.

While the boys give a nod to their north American influences on the EP there is no doubt that they have aimed to create something more forward thinking, and interesting within the genre. The Ripe Guest Mix with SWISHER reflects this perfectly. All contributing to this vision in the 35 minutes mix are tracks from TNGHT , Azealia Banks and Flosstradamus and Sinjin Hawke and Morris

You can catch SWISHER at the official EP launch party at Cant Say on the October 12 . Click here for more info Swisher EP Launch

SWISHER INTERVIEW

The boys took some time to talk about the EP and the trap game.

Petera, you’ve been playing hip hop sets under the moniker ‘Play’ for some time now, what was it that made you want to team up with your bro Phillip and step into production?

There seems to be so many DJs out there now days, whether it be the cool new thing or not I guess there became a point in time where I thought entering the production world might be the answer to separating myself from the rest of the crop, so began my side project SWISHER. My brother and I have always shared the same taste in music, so teaming up with him came naturally.

Working as brothers, whats the production schedule/process like?

We both have our own laptops we work off of, but now that I’ve moved out of my parents place (shout out to mum, dad and the rest of the family) we usually catch up once a week to go over any projects we’ve been working on. From there we will put in some work together on a particular track and then hopefully complete it, if we don’t complete it we will both go away with the project files and work on it solo, then we would exchange files back and forth via the ‘internets’ until we come up with the final product.

What is it about the trap game and the sounds that come out with it that has every one so excited at the moment?

We’ve been listening to trap for quite some time now, it’s kinda hard to put a finger on why trap has everyone so excited at the moment though. As of late, a lot of electronic dance producers have been integrating trap production elements into their music, to a vast majority of the EDM world the trap sound is something new and different to them so in a way I feel people are getting around it because its like a breath of fresh air.

There are some really interesting sounds and uses of ‘elements’ of trap on the EP, what were some of your major influences when working on it?

I’d have to say the biggest influence going in when working on the EP was to create something that was different. As much as we love our trap shit we didn’t want to create an EP that sounded like all the other trap that’s being put out. So we took elements from trap, bass, electronic, hip hop and experimental music, put them all in a pot and stirred it round (literally). Some people might understand it, some people might not, which we are completely cool with.

You’ve teamed up with the awesome local label Scattermusic for this release, how did this come about and what was it about them that attracted you initially?

I’ve been a big fan of Scattermusic from their blog (R.I.P) to their EP releases. Me and my brother got together a few of our tracks that displayed in, what we thought, versatility and shot them off to a few labels for feedback. Scattermusic liked what they heard and so we followed through to present to you guys “Turnt Up” (Shout out to the Scattermusic clique)

America has long been in love with Trap and the 808 sound, but we’re just starting to see it come through in a big way with local producers over here. Where do you think the genre is headed locally?

The sound itself is evolving quite rapidly overseas which in-turn has been noticed by a lot of local producers who have used certain elements from the genre. It’s good because everything I’ve heard from acquaintances and friends hasn’t been the generic sound you’d expect but has its own experimental twist on it, which has set the Melbourne beat scene apart from anywhere else in terms of production.

At the moment there seems to be a niche market in terms of places dedicated to the genre, but due to gaining popularity from more commercial artists, such as Baauer and Flosstradamus, it’s expected to accumulate a greater following which hopefully exposes more artists to keep pushing the sound forward to help it evolve rather than die out.

What’s in store for SWISHER in the near future?

We got some remix work, a collab track with a local artist who we look up to immensely and another side project but in the form of a collective/blog (keep a close eye out for that).
