If you have ever been to a
Sampology
show you have probably left the dancefloor in a sweaty, dazed and confused state wondering: “what just happened in the past hour of my life?”
Sampology is known for his live AV sets, constructing a visual and aural experience by combining killer dance music with pop culture references and nostalgic imagery. The unique mashup of media forms and music is a relatively new format of club entertainment, in Australia anyway, with Sampology at the forefront, inspiring a new era for DJs.
Not only does he destroy his live AV sets, he also creates his own videos and produces his own music. His remix of ‘ Waterbombs’ by Twinsy went viral, as did his Rocky inspired video for Major Lazer ‘s ‘ Watch Out For This ‘.
Returning from his triumphant tour of USA & Canada, Sampology is about to embark on a new venture, touring around Australia and New Zealand with two special dates in Hong Kong and Seoul. The busiest dude in DJing was nice enough to feature on our newest edition of The Ripe Guest Mix, taking the inspirations for his live AV sets and translating them into an online mix just for us. Oh and we also had a few words with the man himself.

INTERVIEW
MATT BLADIN: We’ve been keeping up to date with you super visual summer vids on YouTube, things looks like they just haven’t stopped since we caught you at Falls over NYE.
What have been the highlights so far?
SAMPOLOGY: I was really happy with how the visual set went down for the Big Day Out tour in January, the crowds were really energetic, and really large at every show & gave a lot of love. The Falls set I did was a really fun creative experience. It really pushed me outside of my comfort zone to put together a 100 per cent custom set constructed out of archived footage from the last 20 years of Falls, presented chronologically. If people want to check out some behind the scenes scenes from those two festivals there are two 3 minute mini doco videos up at sampology.com/video.
It looked like you did and saw a lot on your recent US/Canada tour. What have you taken away from it all?
I’ve been over there before for little one offs and showcases but this was my first proper tour, 11 shows all up in 18 days which got pretty hectic at times but it was definitely a dope experience. It felt just like when I started travelling interstate outside of Brisbane a few years ago and slowly but organically introducing myself to new crowds in different cities, I’m super hyped to head back over there in August for some more shows. *starts humming I still call Australia home*
How did you approach the sets overseas recently, compared to how you were planning shows locally over summer. Did you change it up at all?
The backbone of the visual shows I did over there followed on from the set I put together for the Big Day Out tour. However I changed up different points through the set to keep myself interested as well as to tailor it moreso to a North American audience. In addition to the six visual shows I did five straight DJ sets, each of which was completely different.
How did you find the crowds over there?
Super different city to city, party to party. The best crowd was probably at The Rub in NYC where I played a three and a half hour set mostly hiphop/reggae/soul, they really knew their shit but at the same time came to party so the energy was really great. Two days later I played a four hour DJ set at a club opening in Philadelphia mostly spinning disco and house.
Your sets can go to some pretty crazy places, visually and musically, every time we manage to catch one it seems to have taken another step up. Where have you been drawing inspiration from lately?
I’m still really inspired by what Hudson Mohawk has been doing and am looking forward to him hopefully doing his own long player this year. In addition to dudes like him in the electronic world I’ve personally been going back to a lot of soul music which I’ve sprinkled across the Ripe Mix whether it be the Four Tops or BADBADNOTGOOD. I think also with the whole EDM boom there’s a lot of new producers making tracks 100 per cent inside their computer using all virtual synths and drum presets. I’m gravitating towards dudes like Four Tet who’s production is so easy on the ear with it’s warmth as he samples a lot of his sounds from records. So yeah, in the mix theres some big tracks I would definitely play in the club but theres also sections with nice tracks you’ll dig listening to going about your day to day.
Amongst all this heavy duty touring have you found much time to write much new music?
Yep, I’ve got a bunch of tracks together for an EP release, now that I’m back in Oz I’m finishing them presently!
What’s coming up for Samp in the near future?
I’m about to announce a whole bunch of Aus + NZ + (a few) Asian DJ tour dates + I’m working on a brand spanking new Super Visual show, which I’ll be touring later in the year! There’s been some really cool opportunities pop up recently that I’m going to take full advantage of and share the result of that with everyone as soon as possible! Make sure you head to sampology.com to check out all my stuff.
