This week’s guest mix is brought to you by the ever impressive Future Classic djs from the heavy weight label of the Australian electronic music industry, Future Classic . Always with their finger on the pulse of the dance music scene, the Future Classic djs have long been pioneers of finding new and exciting music to share with the world, from their label to the deepest depths of soundcloud.
Working with signees on the label like Flight Facilities , Flume, Anna Lunoe , Panama and Mitzi, it’s no surprise the Future Classic djs have an ear for talent. Known for their long sets displaying their musical knowledge and covering a broad spectrum of music, a standard mix from the guys can last any number of hours and cover everything from ambience to techno. The Ripe Guest Mix with Future Classic djs’ hour long running time may seem humble by comparison, but is by no means disappointing – it moves seamlessly between songs, gliding through its smooth, imperturbable track-list.
Recently the lads released the first Future Classic compilation. A series of tracks and remixes from the label or artists they admire mixed together LIVE at the Beatport headquarters in Berlin, for a commercial release. This release is a testimony of the dedication and skill the guys have as they approach a dj set, and as the compilation goes from strength to strength the results speak for themselves.
Not just a Label but also a music license agency, radio show and cult-like party brand, Future Classic have their fingers in just about every aural pie going around. With some massive releases on the horizon (Think Flume , Mitzi and Panama ) a newly announced stage at Laneway Festival and Sydneysiders still recovering from an ‘epic long set’ at Good God Small Club, it’s clear The Future Classic Djs are showing no signs of slowing down over the summer. The Ripe Guest Mix gives you a taste of what you can expect from the guys as they keep the momentum going.

FUTURE CLASSIC DJS INTERVIEW
Matt: What are the best things about being part of a great music network and label like Future Classic?
Chad: There’s heaps of fun things that we get to do here at FC. Getting new music from our artists and our international friends is always pretty inspiring and would have to be right up there. Also all of the amazing events that we’re involved in like Sydney Festival, Perth Festival and Vivid are pretty sweet to be part of. We’re also presenting a stage for Laneway Festival nationally in 2013 and that’s looking super exciting, should be a bit of fun!
The recent future classic dj compilation cd had some massive, never before heard releases on it from the label, how did you guys go about selecting or finding what would go on the release?
It was a pretty organic process, lots of tunes from our local friends as well as some tracks from artists that we’ve come across in our international travels and through running the label for a while. Some of them were tracks that we didn’t have a home or release for otherwise so the idea of a comp made a lot of sense.
We heard you guys mixed the compilation live at the Beatport headquarters in Berlin, how did this come about? And what was it that made you want to do a commercial release mixed live?
Nath mixed the comp live at the Beatport HQ and it was video streamed in real time as he was mixing it. Seemed like a pretty exciting and cool way to do the mix. The comp was released on Beatport first and was one of the first releases in Beatport’s new mixes site, so it all fit together quite well and made sense to do it that way.
Any stand out favourites from the compilation?
We love all the tracks on the comp, but my fav would have to be the closing track, Worst Friends remix of Gung Ho… super Balearic and blissed out summer vibe on that one.
What does Future Classic look for in an artist when you’re considering taking them under your wing?
One of the main things is that we have to all agree and like the music. It’s a pretty democratic process in some ways though it often comes down to one of us being enthusiastic enough to convince the rest of the group. There isn’t one particular sound that we look for or anything like that, just has to feel authentic and be something that we’re excited about.
As a label, Future Classic puts out a lot of their catalogue on vinyl, what is it about wax that people are drawn towards, and do you think there is resurgence in the demand for releases on vinyl in Australia?
That’s an interesting one. Every year we see articles being written about how vinyl is making a comeback and that people are buying more vinyl. Though on the other hand most of the stores selling new vinyl releases in Sydney have shut down in the last two or three years. Our records are pressed overseas and the majority of the pressings are actually sold overseas, not in Australia. We love vinyl as a medium and as an artefact and we still sell some wax here in Australia, though for us it’s hard to see the resurgence that we hear about in the press every so often.
Who’s killing it locally at the moment? And what does the Australian scene need more of?
We’re pretty excited about Panama’s upcoming EP. The lead single ‘It’s Not Over’ is a really special track that we’ve been preparing to unleash for a while and mid last week it was actually sitting at no 1 on hype machine worldwide. It has a really stunning video that was shot in Berlin earlier this year, just came out really well.
Mitzi have a new single ‘Who Will Love You Now’ that was debuted today actually and their album is coming early 2013. It’s their first output for ages and it’s a really great album, pretty exciting to get the wheels in motion for that record.
And of course Flume’s album is out on Nov 9 and is already doing great things.
The rest of the FC family have some pretty exciting bits as well with new material from New Navy coming shortly and we’ll be shining a light on some new material from one of our long time favs Touch Sensitive as well a new project called Catalina.
In terms of other crews that are on point and that we’re following, there’s heaps of great stuff happening in Australia at the moment. Big fans of Chet Faker, the I Oh You! guys have some fun bits coming and of course all the house heads in Melbourne like Tornado Wallace, Fantastic Man, Melbourne Deepcast and the list goes on…
