It has been a huge year for Cosmo’s Midnight . The duo, consisting of twin brothers Cosmo and Pat, have just released their debut EP Surge to world wide acclaim, gaining recognition on countless international blogs as well as radio play on triple j and college radio in the US. They have also supported heavy hitters such as XXYYXX and Cashmere Cat, and last year they won a remix competition with Flume ’s track ‘ Sleepless ’.

Cosmo’s Midnight are busy in the studio working on a few exciting remixes and have also just been announced to play Outside In Festival alongside Freddie Gibbs , Zomby , BadBadNotGood , Andras Fox , Oscar Key Sung and Oisima . In the middle of all this touring and studio work, the guys were kind enough to whip up a deep guest mix for us.

Blake Creighton: You guys have just embarked on your first national tour, how has that experience been for you so far?

Cosmo’s Midnight: Playing around Australia has been an amazing experience for us both. Until this tour we had never even been on a plane so it was super exciting and pretty damn scary. But being able to go around and see Australia is a great opportunity. So far we’ve only been to Adelaide and Melbourne but we’re heading off to Perth this Friday, which will be our longest flight so far. We’re super keen to see how people react to our music over in WA.

BC: Have there been any memorable moments of the tour thus far?

CM: Nothing too spectacular thus far, we got our first “tits out” in Adelaide, which I guess is some kind of right of passage for producers. Hanging out with Tokimonsta at a Japanese restaurant was pretty sick as well. We sat talking about anime and overrated producers. Overall, she’s super down to earth and super kawaii [cute].

BC: Looking back on the making of Surge , what are some influences that shaped its creation?

CM: The EP was very chill out oriented, and since then we haven’t been making stuff quite like that and we can’t wait to go back and make some more chiller beats. That EP was inspired mainly by all our favourite more relaxed/beatsy acts like Purity Ring , Flylo , Clams Casino and Gold Panda . Those were our main influences at the time, but a lot has changed so our next EP is gunna be pretty different!

BC: Off your debut EP, title track ‘Surge’ seems to be a lot deeper than the more poppy ‘Phantasm’. In what musical direction is Cosmo’s Midnight heading?

CM: We really make whatever we want, which is kind of a double edged sword. People often want you to make 50 ‘Phantasm’s but all you want to do is make music you enjoy at the time. We’ve got tunes coming out that our garage, housey, trappy, stuff a bit like Rustie . We can’t wait to show it all off. Really what we want to do is to be able to traverse many genres but still maintain that “Cosmo’s Midnight” sound.

BC: You are playing Outside In later this year, any artists you are excited to see play?

CM: Pretty much all of them, but in particular we’d say Zomby, Jam City , the Astral Fam cover of the Avalanches and Andras Fox.

BC: If you had the opportunity to work with someone on making a track, who would it be and why?

CM: Aluna from AlunaGeorge , she has a really unique voice and is always on key, what more could you want? Anyway we really love the stuff AlunaGeorge are putting out right now and to get her on a track would be incredible.

BC: What are some of your favourite bands and artists that you listen to?

CM: Wave Racer , Charles Murdoch , Dauwd , 813 , Stwo , Jaw Jam , Alizzz , AWE , Sweater Beats , Deft … this list could go on for eternity, there is so much music around it’s impossible to say who your fav is, but right now those guys have got our attention for sure.
