The Ripe Guest Mix with Cassian

Purveyor of deep, smooth beats Cassian has been warming our ears for a few years now with his forward thinking sets and always reliable productions. No doubt you’ve caught him doing his thing right across Australia recently, or perhaps in the packed out, very loose and sweaty festival tent at Falls over NYE, as we did.

If you fit into those category you’ll be as excited as us for this weeks guest mix. If for some reason you’ve only just decided to emerge from under your musical rock, and are unaware of Cassian’s sounds, then you’re in for a treat.

Recently returned from a massive North American and Canadian tour, Cassian supported names like The Presets , Aeroplane , Tiger & Woods , Guy Gerber , MK , Danny Daze , Noir , Sander Kleinenberg , Hot Since 82 , Maxxi Soundsystem amongst other headline shows. Thankfully upon his return he’s found time to put together a selection of his favorite beats ( including some of his own remix work) amidst a busy calendar of studio commitments.

The rest of 2013 seems set to continue at a frantic pace, with an EP to be expected in August as well as national and Asia tours. For now however The Ripe guest mix is hitting the spot when it comes to all things Cassian.

We had a chat to the man himself about what’s been going on:

Matt Bladin: 2012 was a massive year for you, production and shows wise. This year is looking even bigger, what’s on the card for the rest of 2013?

Cassian: A lot more studio time this year compared to last! I’ve been home since the start of April and am here up until late July. There will be a couple of Aus tours later in the year (one of them in support of a new original release) as well as a few dates around the rest of the world (Europe, north + south America & Asia). I’m aiming to have the new EP out by late August.

You recently wrapped up a tour of America, how did that all go down and what did you get up to?

It was great! Lots of support shows this time around which I always love. I started out as a warm-up DJ and I really enjoy tailoring a set around the headline act & setting things up nicely for them. I supported Aeroplane (on 3 dates), Tiger & Woods, Guy Gerber, MK, Danny Daze, The Presets (!!), Noir, Sander Kleinenberg, Hot Since 82, Maxxi Soundsystem and played a handful of my own headline shows.

Any highlights from the road?

Two main highlights from the tour were playing with The Presets in Chile and the Nervous label party in Miami. The gig in the Chile was the first time I’ve played with and met those guys and it was awesome to have a little bit of Australia so far away from home

How did you find the crowds over there? Do you think some of the talent coming out of Aus at the moment is continuing to grow and be noticed in the states?

The crowds are really receptive and people are coming out because they have a passion for the music. They’re really knowledgeable for the most part & I think are quite pro-active in seeking out music for themselves online. There are definitely more Australians coming through over there, we’re so close geographically and there is an ever growing crew in LA.

You said you’ve been hitting the studio lately, any hint as to what we can expect?

Yep! I’ve just finished a pretty full on three weeks in the studio working on a new project. Next on the agenda is finishing off my next solo EP which is coming together nicely. There may or may not be a new remix in the next month too.

Who’s killing it at the moment and why?

Dirty Bird, Exploited & pretty much all German house music producers. Because they’re all releasing good music!
