PHANTOGRAM – Celebrating Nothing

Phantogram are back with their latest release, ‘ Celebrating Nothing ‘. The new release is another taste of their upcoming self-titled EP, which comes out on the 30th of September. It seems to be a long time in between drinks for this band, who released their last EP in 2011.

The synth pop duo from New York have gone on a slightly different direction since their most recent single ‘ Black Out Days ‘ was released two weeks ago, moving in a more organic direction. What Phantogram have presented us with is a brooding pop ballad, buffed out with eerie sweeping synths, a lo-fi drum beat and repetitive bassline. But you can really hear those live instruments, especially with the hit of the snare drums. Phantogram have been seemingly making this transition throughout their career, constantly moving from electronic sounds to live instruments. A fine example of this would be the comparison drawn between two of their hit singles ‘ Don’t Move ‘ and ‘ When I’m Small ‘.

It is a welcome change of pace and shows the bands versatility and ability to implement different sounds and instruments. They are no ‘one-trick pony’.
