Oracular Spectacular is my nostalgic album. The pschadelic pop music scripted out the perfect soundtrack to high school graduates embarking on the next chapter of their lives. Free, young and stupid, willing to ditch any sort of responsibility if a better offer of a party or an adventure came up. ‘ Time To Pretend ‘ was the anthem.
Unfortunately I feel as though MGMT are not going to replicate the music that fueled my adolescence. Their last album Congratulations was a statement. MGMT did the opposite of selling out, surprising fans with weirder music that no one could relate to. This new offering, called ‘ Alien Days ‘, is much of the same from the band except this time we at least have some stock standard song structure. The track is reminiscent of bands like The Beatles on Sgt. Peppers Lonely Harts Club Band and David Bowie’s weirder stuff, born from a drug fueled romp in the 60s and 70s. It is weird, wacky and identifiably MGMT.
Perhaps we should look away from Electric Feel similarities and accept MGMT for what the are now. Psychedelic, experimental, indie, pop rock with a very unique twist.
