Enter a review from Kings Of Leon’s former biggest fan.
From their first LP, Youth And Young Manhood I was hooked, songs such as ‘ Red Morning Light ‘ and ‘ Molly’s Chambers ‘ shaped my teenage years and inspired me to create some sort of replicate band with two of my best mates. However as the years progressed I started to fall out of love with them more and more. It wasn’t because of my age or me maturing, but because their sound started to change. No longer was I thrashing on my six string piece-of-shit behringer guitar. But I was sitting there forcing myself to enjoy their music.
Now, it seems as though Kings Of Leon are trying to recreate a sound that made them so prolific. Of course I am not blaming them for progressing, every band has to change their sound to appeal to a larger audience. That garage, low-fi sound isn’t always going to sell records. But it seems as though they have lost that ability to create genuine rock n roll gems like ‘ Four Kicks ‘ or ‘ The Bucket ‘ and instead they have gone for some indie-rock inspired feel good pop music.
At first I was excited, those fuzzy guitar chords, that awesome walking bass and that low-fi drum beat. You even get a sense that Caleb Followill is desperate trying to recapture his forgotten form, but then the chorus hits and it was all for nothing. Lack luster and weak. I mean it’s not offensive to listen to, but I just expect more. Although, I expected more on their last two albums and where and that get me? When do you finally decide it is time to give up?
I thought that it was possible, that one day, the old KOL would return. But it seems as though, as much as I can appreciate their effort on this single, it’s just not going to happen.
“ Supersoaker ” is the first single off upcoming album Mechanical Bull , set to be dropped on September 24th.
