When I heard of a forthcoming Nicolas Jaar remix of Melbourne’s Chet Faker last month, it stirred up an excitement on par to hearing all my Christmases were about to arrive at once. Expectations were high. Having received word that a remix of ‘ Terms And Conditions ‘ had finally dropped on Christmas morning, I stumbled down the halls of the web, sprinted down the stairs of Google search results and found this sweet little gift packaged up under the Future Classics Soundcloud page.
There it was. Two of my favourite producers, both names in the same title. The gift under the tree that I had spent a month shaking, deliberating and predicting was about to be revealed. Head phones in, sound up… play.
Immediately the distinctive sounds of Jaar have you stepping in to his world. An industrious soundscape sets the scene. A click sampled from Faker’s track has been slowed down to create a series of footsteps towards a swirling synth and a looped vocal sample which build toward the inevitable drop. The song from here on in is destructively Jaar - esk. The beat, while similar to that of ‘Terms And Conditions’, is reminiscent of Jaar’s own songs like ‘ Russian Doll ‘. A tremolo effect has his beats, clicks and cymbals bouncing either side of you, while intelligent tempo shifting gives the song an unpredictable flow that is fragile and keeps you guessing.
But all up it leaves you questioning where Chet Faker is amongst it all. While this is Jaar’s down-tempo minimalism that we’ve come to know and love, I really feel like he had so much to work with on this one. For me it’s disappointing there isn’t more of the original song to gratify the excitement of seeing both names on the same track. ‘Terms And Conditions’ has so much to work with and I was really expecting to hear some sort of hybrid between Chet Faker’s soul and Nicolas Jaar’s surrealism.
All in all, this is a great Nicolas Jaar track. His fans (me for one) have a new song to feast on while stuffing themselves with christmas leftovers. However, those hoping to hear some sort of weird and wonderful ‘Chet-Jarr’ fusion will probably be a bit disappointed.
