“We aim to make every car ride a road trip, every day an adventure and every moment a never ending festival. We want our rhythmic jams to be the soundtrack to your world, each syncopation tied with the heartbeat of your experience, so that before long – you find yourself forgetting where real life stops, and our world begins”
With a mission like that who needs anything else? Brother Fox is a Brisbane trio making upbeat reggae/roots folk music and they’re doing a damn good job. After winning the Byron Bay Bluesfest Busking Competition in 2012, they secured a spot playing at Bluesfest and spent the rest of last year gigging, including a support slot in Jinja Safari ’s Indent tour.
They currently occupy the top three slots on triple j ’s Unearthed overall charts, as well as dominating the roots category. At number one is ‘ Festival’ , a track that sums up their musical philosophy. More bands should have musical philosophies.
Buoyant vibes bounce out of this track. Naming influences like Mumford & Sons , Jason Mraz and John Butler Trio , this track sounds like an amalgamation of the latter worked in alongside Bob Marley -esque vocals. Incorporating all the jungle beats you could possibly imagine, a killer rift and the handy tambourine, they go wild somewhere around the centre.
I love having my expectations met and these guys are producing exactly the sort of music you would expect from reading their philosophy. Perfect for big smiles and bear hugs.
