Straight out of Perth and into a pool of rich 80s synths, guitar and sax, Bastian’s Happy Flight are a band that find their comfort zone in a blend of retro influences with modern elctro-pop. Their latest single, ‘ Hooray ’ is a perfect taste of their retro-pop shtick and had us wanting to pull out the old ‘Never Ending Story’ VHS one more time.
Described as “a nod to the likes of Hall & Oates as they are a high five to Friendly Fires ”, it’s no wonder plucking guitars, smooth synth and reverbed pounding drum sounds dominate the group’s latest EP. ‘Hooray’ keeps to this well refined recipe, turning up romantic angst a few notches with some very fine lyrical and vocal work.
I’d love to be able to say that we are the first to uncover the talents of BHF, but its seems the Western Australia Music Awards have beaten us to the punch. The five piece picked up ‘Best Electronic Song’ with their first single ‘ My Love ‘ as well as being nominated for ‘Best Dance Song’, ‘Best Pop Song’, ‘Best Guitarist’ and ‘Best Keyboardist/Multi-instrumentalist’.
